Online Etiquette

Netiquette (net + etiquette) is a code of conduct for online virtual classrooms to ensure that everyone has a safe and respectful online experience.

Do

  1. Put yourself on mute unless you are asked by your teacher to teach.
  2. Use your real name during online meetings with EBS staff.
  3. Raise your “virtual hand” if you have a question and wait to be recognized when responding to a question or comment.
  4. Be respectful: It is not a time to chat with friends. Remember to use proper grammar and spelling, please and thank you.
  5. Choose a space that is free from distractions.

Don’t

  1. Make sarcastic jokes: tone is hard to read online. Think before you type. Post things that you are comfortable with everyone seeing, including your teacher and parents.
  2. Type using all uppercase letters: It is often perceived as yelling and people will have a hard time taking you seriously.
  3. Abuse the chat box: Unnecessary chatting during class can be a major distraction to the teacher and the other students.

BULLYING
Elizabeth Ballantyne School strongly condemns any form of violence or bullying. This applies to all members of the Elizabeth Ballantyne community, including students, staff, administration and parents. We are committed to taking proactive measures to effectively reduce such incidents and provide a safe learning and working environment.
Bullying is defined as behaviour that involves repeated abuse and an imbalance of power. It manifests in three forms:
  • Physical: involves acts such as hitting, spitting, shoving, pushing, kicking, or punching.
  • Verbal/Written: can include things such as threats, lying to create conflict, name-calling, teasing, sexual, racist or homophobic remarks or slurs.
  • Psychological: can take the form of intimidation, direct or indirect forms of social exclusion, spreading rumours and gossip. Cyberbullying contains all the elements of bullying (physical, verbal and psychological abuse) but extends them in a public, online environment.

FOLLOW-UP:

  • Students involved in confrontations and/or bullying situations will work with the Behaviour Technicians on conflict resolution and empathy.
  • Parents will be contacted.
  • In some cases, the police may be contacted to intervene.
